FACEBOOK’S DREAM ACT, I WILL CALL EVERYDAY UNTIL IT
PASSES!!!!! OLD NEWS |
Sept 17, 2007
Monday, September 17, 2007
Today, Senator Richard Durbin (D-IL), Chuck Hagel (R-NE) and Richard Lugar (R-IN) will introduce the DREAM Act as an amendment to H.R. 1585, the Department of Defense authorization bill, which returns to the Senate floor for debate today. You may remember that the Department of Defense authorization bill was debated in mid-July but was pulled for reasons unrelated to the DREAM Act.
The DREAM Act would provide a 6-year path to permanent residence and eventual citizenship for individuals brought to the U.S. years ago as undocumented children if they graduate from high school and continue on to college or military service.
This may be the best chance this year for the DREAM Act to become law (although most likely it will not be the last opportunity). If the amendment passes, the DREAM Act would stand an excellent chance of becoming law this year. The amendment will need 60 votes to pass.
We do not yet know when the vote will be, and it is possible that procedural obstacles could prevent one from occurring at all. But regardless, it is imperative for all DREAM Act supporters to call your Senators and click here to send an e-mail message to them today, and again tomorrow, and again every day until the vote occurs. You can find your Senators' phone numbers here.
This time, even more than the last time the amendment was set for consideration, anti-immigrant groups have come out swinging by spreading falsehoods about the DREAM Act in an attempt to inflame their base to intimidate Senators like they did in the Senate debate about immigration reform. But DREAM Act supporters are passionate too. We can and must fight back and match their intensity.

Post Laura Richardson New Democratic 37th Congressional Rep.
I ran into her last week on Tuesday as she was leaving the state assembly. I congratulated her and asked her to support the Fed Dream Act. She had not heard about the issue but she was clear on her progressive position regarding a pathway to legalization for California residents. I asked her to co-sponsor the Fed Dream Act and she said she would, especially for a fellow bruin. I explained to her why the Dream Act is needed and she agreed to co-sponsor the bill once she is in office. She was very warm and seemed to agree on the issue, her constituency comes from Long Beach, Carson and Compton CA.

The dreams of millions of
undocumented students cannot wait another year. We need the American DREAM Act, H.R.
1275, to pass this year. We thank
you for your continued support for this legislation, but only with your
active leadership in the House of Representatives will the dreams of
undocumented students become a reality.
I urge you to be a leader for undocumented students and a leader for
the American DREAM Act.

What is happening in my own
words:
Again, the promise of the Dream
Act as amendment to another bill dematerialized because of politics. Still,
clearly the Dream Act is in the mind of our legislators, this means that
what we have been doing for the past year has been working. All we have to
do is keep pressuring, keep calling, faxing, emailing, and
mailing our senators and congress reps.

July 25, 2007:!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"The Senate will vote TODAY
on two key amendments! One is TERRIBLE ; the other
is TERRIFIC!
Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC)
will offer the Border Security First Act of 2007 as an amendment to
the Homeland Security Appropriations bill ( H.R.
2638). This TERRIBLE enforcement-only amendment would do nothing but add to
the dysfunction of our system and the suffering of hard working immigrants.
It must be OPPOSED!
In response, Senate Majority
Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) will offer a TERRIFIC side-by-side amendment to
the Graham amendment. This positive amendment would strengthen our border
security while providing limited, targeted relief to deserving immigrant
populations. It must be SUPPORTED!
Call Sen. Dianne Feinstein and
Sen. Barbara Boxer NOW!!
Sen. Dianne Feinstein: (202)
224-3841
Sen. Barbara Boxer: (202)
224-3553
Tell them to:
OPPOSE the Graham amendment that
would:
1- Expand state and local law
enforcement of civil immigration laws;
2- Expand expedited removal and
further restrict the right of immigrants, including longtime legal
permanent residents, to administrative or judicial review;
3- Subject visa overstayers to mandatory detention, raising serious
cost and constitutional concerns;
4- Expand criminal penalties for
immigration violations, including harsh and costly mandatory minimum
sentences; and
5- Penalize cities that have
chosen NOT to turn their police force into immigration agents.
SUPPORT the Reid side-by-side
amendment that would:
1- Strengthen border security
with smart funding measures;
2- Include the DREAM Act and
provide targeted relief to thousands of deserving children; and
3- Include AgJOBS
and ensure that American farms are not confronted again this year with a
labor shortage of crisis proportions."

I'm trying to compile a thorough
list of the Senator's Contact information, if someone can help fill it in
that'd be cool. Here is the list, you can add me as a friend and email me
once you have it done. I'm not too active this week because of work
and school, but next week expect a whole lot of
new resources.

Like many of you have noticed,
there is a continuous Dream Act buzz, but just because we hear about it
doesn't mean that it will become a reality. We need to thank Senator Durbin
("Call Durbin at 202 224 2152 Thanking him for his effort and you wish
for his continued support. Here's Kennedy's too (202) 224-4543.")
and also get past co-sponsors back to sponsorship.
Please keep calling everyday.

Let's all take the time today to
call Sen. Durbin and thank him for keeping our dreams alive.
"Senators Richard Durbin
(D-Ill.), Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.) and Richard Lugar
(R-Ind.) were expected to introduce an amendment encompassing the DREAM Act
during the debate of the defense authorization bill that was cut short
Wednesday. Sandra Abrevaya, a spokeswoman for
Senator Durbin, said Wednesday afternoon that the majority whip will still
be looking to introduce the amendment whenever the Senate next returns its
attention to the defense authorization bill, and added that, should this
approach ultimately fail, “He’ll look at the very next opportunity.”

"You may have heard, Sen. Reid pulled H.R. 1585 off of the floor today
after the Levin-Reid Iraq amendment failed this morning. The DREAM Act
is not likely to come up again until September. In addition to DoD authorization, there are other attractive vehicles
that will
be available in September that the sponsors have their
eyes on."
Please call everyday until
September.
July 18, 2007:
By far the most important day to
call! Call early...early! This is the day the Dream Act can actually
be debated. Yes, the moment we have been waiting for during the past 6
years (or decades for some of us). If there is one day you need to
call it's today!
July 17, 2007:
Hate groups on Facebook: They are calling, are you?
They group the Dream Act with
voluntary illegal immigration; the two are completely unrelated! They are
spreading lies by claiming we do not pay taxes and we are voluntarily
breaking the law. They are voicing their opinion to our legislators. Please
call everyday!!!!! There is a reason why this bill is bi-partisan; it is
the RIGHT thing to do.
